What is XR?

Extended reality, or XR, has become the term used in the scholastic field for these[SO1]  virtual worlds. “Extended Reality (XR) is the umbrella term used for VR, AR, and MR, as well as all future realities such technology might bring. XR covers the full spectrum of real and virtual environments” (Scribani).

Why think about the design process for XR?

Dr. Edward Castronova, in his book Exodus to the Virtual World, written in 2007, not only states that a global change is upon us but breaks down the gravity of this situation.  “The exodus of these people from the real world, from our normal daily life of living rooms, cubicles, and shopping malls, will create a change in a social climate that makes global warming look like a tempest in a teacup.” Although this is a dramatic statement about this change, it still highlights the significance of such a global transformation. With this global change, XR technologies are becoming more and more prevalent. It becomes imperative that we are creating live experiences with a thought-out design process.

“Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars.”

— Carl Sagan
